Troy Bynum is a wildlife photographer and avid birder from the Philadelphia area. He grew up in Mt. Airy, PA, and spent a lot of time exploring Wissahickon Valley Park as a kid, where his interest and love for nature began. As Troy grew, so did his admiration for nature – wildlife to be more specific.

Now, Troy spends most of his free time exploring natural areas around the tri-state area in search of beautiful birds. He specializes in showcasing the beautiful patterns, textures, and colors found throughout nature. We oftentimes overlook a lot of these things that nature has to offer and Troy is on a mission to spark interest in others to go outside and explore the world around them.

CLASS DESCRIPTION (10:30 – 11:30 am)

Participants will gain an understanding of the fundamentals of photography – aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and exposure compensation – to best capture photos of the desired subject out in the field. This course focuses on transitioning into using manual settings.

Important terminology and troubleshooting techniques will be explored so participants can capture images with their own artistic style. This course is designed to be a hands-on training that will help improve participants’ photography skills, whether complete beginners or experienced photographers.

At the end of the course, participants will be able to capture pictures of wildlife or other subjects using manual settings. The skills learned in this class are general to digital photography and can be applied to DSLR, mirrorless cameras, bridge, and superzoom cameras.

BOAT TOUR DESCRIPTION (2:00 – 4:00 pm)

Join us for a two-hour cruise of the waters around the mouth of the Delaware Bay aboard the Thelma Dale IV. The boat features a heated cabin, benches along the lower deck rail, and a top deck for open-air viewing. We will visit the two stone breakwaters and the ice breakers in search of waterfowl and seabirds including gulls, cormorants, gannets and loons. Although late in the season, we also have a chance of seeing Harbor and/or Gray Seals that haul out on the rocks (we saw them in April 2022). Bottlenose Dolphins are a possibility, too! Restrooms are available on board, and coolers (with off-centered ales from Dogfish Head 😀) are welcome.

We are coordinating the boat trips around low tide, which will offer better views if the seals are hauled out on the lower breakwater rocks. Low tide for Lewes on April 21 is 4:09 pm.

Troy Bynum will be joining you on the boat trip to help you with your photography. DBW Guides Chris Bennett, Anthony Gonzon, Russ Kovach and Jim Rapp will also be on the boat to assist with bird spotting and ID.
