Meet your guides at Arena’s Deli in Lewes for coffee and an overview of the day’s itinerary. After coffee, we’ll caravan to Cape Henlopen State Park. The largest state park in Delaware has much to offer birders in early spring. Located where the Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic, the park contains pitch pine forest, forested wetland, tidal marsh, dunes and beach habitats that support a wide array of bird life. Participants on this trip are sure to see Brown-headed Nuthatch, loons, scoters and other bay and sea ducks. Less common or rare birds that may be encountered include “Ipswich” Savannah Sparrow, Razorbill, Great Cormorant, and Lesser Black-backed Gull. After our morning adventure, we’ll break for lunch before our afternoon field trip at Prime Hook NWR.
Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge (DRIVING/HIKING)
1:30 – 4:30 pm
Meeting Location: Prime Hook Visitor Center, 11978 Turkle Pond Rd, Milton, DE 19968
We’ll meet at the Prime Hook Visitor Center for a short hike at the refuge in search of waterfowl, raptors and songbirds. We will then head out to several Delaware Bay access sites to scan the bay for loons, sea ducks and gulls. We’ll finish along Lighthouse Road at the north end of Slaughter Beach in search of Seaside Sparrows in the marsh and shorebirds at Mispillion Harbor. We’ll end our adventure at Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats in Rehoboth Beach, where we’ll host our Happy Hour Tally Rally and enjoy craft beer and great food.
Food and drink are not included in the cost for this trip.
No cancellations are accepted after March 15, 2017.
