MORNING TRIPS

Berlin Falls Park and Golden Quarter Farm (DRIVING/HIKING)
8:00 -11:00 a.m.
Cost: $25/person
Meeting location: Parking lot for Berlin Falls Park in Berlin, MD

If it’s a wide variety of birds you seek, try this trip to Berlin’s wild 60-acre nature park and a 150-acre private farm. We’ll start at the new Berlin Falls Park which offers great looks at a wide variety of duck species like Northern Shovelers, Hooded Mergansers, and Ruddy Ducks in the park’s ponds. Hawks and eagles patrol the area for hapless dabblers. Then we’ll head 10 minutes east to Golden Quarter Farm along Ayers Creek. There we’ll traverse young forest, restored ponds, fields and the unspoiled creekside to seek Brown-headed Nuthatches, kinglets, eagles, Wood Ducks, and Wilson’s Snipe.

Assateague & Surrounds (DRIVING/HIKING)
8:00 – 11:00 am
Cost: $25/person
Meeting Location: Assateague Island Visitor Center

Locals know where to see the best variety of ducks, shorebirds, and raptors. So it is local birders who will guide this secret sojourn to the four best Assateague, Ocean City, and West Ocean City winter birding spots. While seals excite many Ocean City visitors in winter, participants in this trip will also have chances to see Harlequin Ducks, Razorbills, Peregrine Falcons, Long-tailed Ducks, and a full complement of fresh and saltwater loving winter ducks.

Indian River Inlet, Burton’s Island & James Farm Ecological Preserve (DRIVING/HIKING)

The Delaware Coast between Indian River Inlet and Gordons Pond offers some of Delaware’s best coastal birding. Indian River Inlet is home to a huge mixed flock of sea ducks including all three scoters and Long-tailed Ducks that may be joined by Common Eider and Harlequin Duck, Great Cormorants and both Loons. Purple Sandpipers are common on the inlet jetties. Horned Grebes may be found Burton’s Island, and large rafts of Brant can be seen from the beach at the James Farm Ecological Preserve on Rehoboth Bay.
